Digital Product Passport

Guide

What is a Digital Product Passport (DPP)? — The Complete Guide 2026

Everything about the EU Digital Product Passport: obligations, deadlines, implementation for the chemical industry

Olivier Höfer, Managing Director, OYSI GmbH

What is a Digital Product Passport?

A Digital Product Passport (DPP) is a standardized electronic dataset that consolidates all relevant product information across its entire lifecycle — from manufacturing through use to recycling.

The DPP is accessed via a QR code or digital identifier (such as a Data Matrix code) on the product or its packaging. Anyone — from end consumers to retailers to recycling companies — can access the product data.

EU Regulation ESPR 2024/1781

The Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR), published as EU Regulation 2024/1781, is the legal basis for the Digital Product Passport. It was published in the EU Official Journal on June 28, 2024, and entered into force on July 18, 2024.

The ESPR replaces the previous Ecodesign Directive 2009/125/EC and extends the scope from energy-related products to virtually all physical goods on the EU market.

Timeline and Deadlines

  • 2025: Delegated acts for first product categories (textiles, batteries)
  • 2026: Pilot phase and voluntary implementation
  • 2027: Mandatory DPP for first product groups
  • 2030: Extension to additional product categories including chemicals

DPP for the Chemical Industry

For chemical products, the DPP offers particular advantages:

  • GHS Labeling: All hazard information (H-statements, P-statements, pictograms) digital and always up-to-date
  • Safety Data Sheets (SDS): Direct download in all relevant languages
  • REACH Compliance: Proof of registration and compliance
  • Batch Traceability: Each batch with its own passport — from manufacturer to end consumer
  • UFI Code: Unique identification for poison control centers

Benefits of DPP for Companies

  1. Compliance: Meeting EU requirements ahead of deadline
  2. Transparency: Building trust with customers and partners
  3. Efficiency: Centralized product data instead of scattered documents
  4. Competitive advantage: Pioneer in digital transformation
  5. Sustainability: Contributing to Circular Economy through recycling information
